ComScore released its Top 50 sites and more shopping related traffic data

Today comScore released its Top 50 sites and more shopping related traffic data. (Thanks Greg)Here are two charts that are noteworthy:

picture-241

The chart above shows that branded retailer sites are gaining strongly. This is mostly "local" traffic - people looking at products and then largely going into stores to buy. Accordingly the ShopLocal content is generally about deals in local stores (content that appears in newspaper circulars). In addition, the table below shows how, as a category, coupons have become enormously popular in this bad economy.

This is February 2008 revision of the Popular Deal Sites list. You can find the last month revision of the list here.

The change in rating shows the difference compared to January results. The list has a total of 29 web sites which is 3 less than the last month. There are 52 more in my database that didn't meet the Alexa Rank < 100,000 requirement.

It is another down month for the deal sites. Alexa rank is red for all but three sites and those three are up in single digits. The 3 sites that are gone from the list this month are keepcash.com, dailydeals.com, and bargainshare.com

The biggest decliner is gottadeal.com (-25.44%) which still falls from the huge spike of Black Friday activity (Alexa rank is a 3 month rolling average). The runner up is judysbook.com (-19.8%). The last I heard about them is that they were for sale. DealTaker has been bought as well, I wonder how that reflects on its ranking a few months from now

Popular price comparison sites - February 2008

Published March 12th, 2008

This is February 2008 revision of the Popular Price Comparison web sites list. You can find the last month revision of the list here.

The change in rating shows the difference compared to January results. The list has a total of 33 web sites and there are 17 more sites in my database that don't meet Alexa Rank < 100,000 requirement.

List hasn't changed since last month except for ugenie.com (59.16%) who had a nice come back to replace the last position held by streetprices.com. Ugine was in fact the best performer this month. They seem to have had a traffic surge late January after a long decline. Don't really have an explanation to this other than possibly increased marketing spendings.

The worst performer this month is mpire.com (-44.32%) who I would guess are too busy with their new toy, WidgetBucks, to be able keep an eye on the price comparison business.

New User's Guide
Dealhack exists to help you get the most out of shopping on the web. Our goal is to highlight the coolest stuff and the best deals online. The site is organized so you can shop however you want.

If you're just browsing for fun or ideas, check out the items posted on the deals page or in the archives. These pages contain every new savings opportunity added in each of the different categories. However, when you want to narrow your focus, the deals are also separated into specific groups:

* To find great prices, discounts and bargains, click on the tab marked specials.

* If you are looking for coupons, click that tab for a summary of coupon codes offered by the various stores that we track.

* To find rebates, select that tab. You'll find a run down of the cash-back deals offered at different retail sites across the web.

* Looking for clearance items? Then choose that tab for details on some of the best closeouts on the Internet.

If you are shopping for the best deal on a specific product, start with a search using the name or keywords for the item you want. The search box can be found in the upper right-hand corner of our home page and most of the other pages throughout the site.

Dealhack also has a series of buyer's guides for popular products. These are informative articles created to help you make the best decisions when shopping for various items. This is where we publish in-depth research, comparison guides and other tips to help you make the best purchase decisions. Check this section frequently; we update often and also plan to create more of these useful guides.

Dealhack also allows you to view its postings on your own RSS/Atom reader. If you have not yet discovered content aggregators, they are an exciting tool to help you stay on top of lots of information each day. You can create your own online page through My Yahoo! or download software from one of the popular RSS Readers:

Amphetadesk - Windows, Mac, Linux (open source); freeware
Awasu - Windows; free for personal use
Bloglines - Web-based news aggregator; free
FeedDemon - Windows; commercial software, trial available
Feedreader - Windows (open source); freeware
My Yahoo! - Web-based news aggregator; free
NetNewsWire - Mac OS X; commercial software, trial available
NewsFire - Mac OS X; freeware
Rocket RSS Reader - Web-based RSS reader; free
RSS Reader - Windows; freeware

Once you set up your reader, you can view current headlines from all the sources you identify, such as news sites, blogs, and of course, Dealhack. When you click through a headline on your reader, you'll go directly to the full article.

If you use the Firefox browser, look for the icon in the bottom right corner of your browser window. It's the sign that you can use Live Bookmarks, a system that detects RSS feeds and allows users to subscribe. Just click on the icon to add Dealhack to your subscription list. The Dealhack feed will then appear in your Bookmarks list.

For more information on using Dealhack, check out the frequently asked questions.

Tell a Friend: Although you might have noticed that we've already built a "Tell a Friend" link below each posting, this function isn't activated yet. Soon, however, when you see a deal that you think would be of interest to someone you know, you will be able to click on the button to go to a page that will allow you to enter the friend's email and forward a copy of the deal.

In the meantime, to send a deal to a friend, click on any headline to go to the single-deal page for that item. While on that page, cut and paste the URL from the address bar of your browser into an email.

Dealhack alerts: This feature will allow you to request that we send you notification by email whenever there is a deal featuring a specific item or store that you chose. You can sign up to receive a message any time we post a deal containing the keyword(s) you submit. That way, you'll find out about the bargains you care about as soon as they are released. This is a great tool if you are researching a product but aren't ready to buy yet or if you are waiting to find something at the very best price.

Email newsletters: We plan to allow users to sign up for daily and/or weekly email updates. The daily email will contain each of the deals posted every day. The weekly newsletter will contain highlight of the best deals posted each week.
